What is Ultraviolet Filtration?

Ultraviolet light disinfection units used for Water Disinfection is invisible light with a frequency just below the visible spectrum. The germicidal wavelength or the frequency in the ultraviolet spectrum that best inactivates micro-organisms, mold spores and viral contaminants is centered on 254 nanometers (nm). This area is most commonly referred as UVC energy.

How Does UV Work?

The germicidal energy of ultraviolet light at 254nm destroys illness-causing micro-organisms by attacking their genetic core (DNA). This powerful dose of UV light eliminates their ability to reproduce.   Microorganisms are exposed to a lethal dose of germicidal UV energy. 99.99 percent of those organisms, including E coli, Cryptosporidium and Giardia, are destroyed.

Mermaid’s Use of UV in your home or business:

Mermaid see’s Ultraviolet filtration deployed in many inappropriate or haphazard configurations.  UV is ONLY for bacteria removal as we know it in residential or small system configuration.

Why would you have Ultraviolet Filtration on Eastern Long Island?

If you are on traditional municipal / street water purchasing water from a water authority, one thing you likely do not NEED is an Ultraviolet unit for bacteria.  Typically, these systems are loaded with Chlorine of some kind and it would be nearly impossible for bacteria to grow.  And if the bacteria can survive in chlorine, it will survive the UV treatment.

It starts with your well :

A properly built deep well on eastern long island is likely to be bacteria free.  But time takes its toll on this underground structure.  Mermaid highly recommends always attempting to find the SOURCE of bacteria and not just treating the symptoms of well failure, such as bacteria.

Test for common bacteria first, our sister company GOLDMAN water testing can set this up and help you.  If you have bacteria in your well water work with us or your well driller to understand where the bacteria is coming from.

Making the choice of Ultraviolet Installation:

If bacteria free, and your well is “of age” or condition unknown, perhaps consider an UV treatment unit for the peace of mind.  It’s a relatively small investment for the “belt and suspender approach.  Folks with young children or immune compromised might prioritize UV.

If your well has bacteria in it ( Positive Test Result), its very likely your home has bacteria in it too.  A well water chlorination should take place and clean test results should come from within the homes plumbing system.

Once we know the home is bacteria free, we would install the UV unit at the point of entry, near the well storage tank BEFORE the water goes to your homes individual plumbing lines.

The MUST DO of installations:

1) Be sized according to the flow rate

2) Pre – filtration should be installed to keep the in water interface clean and clear

….. is your acidic water simply going to corrode the new unit?

3) The bulb needs to changed according to service intervals and the internal glass “quartz” must be cleaned or replaced ….. Just because its “on” don’t mean the light wave is still working to kill bacteria.

Public facing facilities:  Some installations in doctors offices, dentists, hotels, restaurants, and offices are regulated or required by the Department of Health after repeated failed testing.  Talk to one of our certified water system operators about getting your business complaint.
